The Survey Backbone of Infrastructure Projects
Civil surveying is the survey work that carries a civil engineering project from concept to closeout. Before an engineer can design a road, a drainage system, or a utility line, someone has to establish what exists: the boundaries and rights-of-way, the ground surface, the existing utilities, and a control network everything can be measured against. After the design is finished, someone has to translate it back onto the ground for the contractor — and document what actually got built.
That someone is the surveyor, and the quality of that work quietly determines how the whole project goes. A topo with a busted vertical datum becomes a drainage design that doesn't drain. A staking error becomes a waterline in the wrong easement. Control that shifts between phases becomes an as-built that doesn't close against the design. None of these are design errors — but the engineer inherits every one of them.
Alliance provides civil survey support across San Antonio with one deliberate limitation: we don't do design. No roadway design, no drainage design, no subdivision engineering. For civil firms, that means bringing us in creates zero scope conflict — we're your survey department, not your competitor angling for the next phase.
Civil survey support from Alliance includes:
Project control networks — horizontal and vertical control established with GPS/GNSS and digital levels, durable monuments set, control data sheets published. Every phase works from the same network.
Topographic surveys & surfaces — existing conditions mapped with contours, spot elevations, and break lines; surfaces delivered ready for Civil 3D.
Boundary & right-of-way — sealed boundary determinations, ROW exhibits, and easement descriptions that hold up in title review and acquisition.
Construction staking — roadway, curb, storm, sanitary, water, inlets, ponds, and grading limits staked with cut sheets to the contractor, coordinated with the construction sequence.
As-built documentation — finished infrastructure located and compared against design, sealed for closeout, permitting, and record drawings.
Datum discipline — work referenced to the coordinate system, basis of bearings, and vertical datum your project specifies. Tell us your standards; we match them.
One Control Network, Three Phases
The most expensive survey problems on civil projects come from phase hand-offs — different firms, different control, different datums. Alliance carries one network through the entire project.
Deliverables That Drop Into Your Workflow
CAD: AutoCAD DWG with organized layers — to your firm's layer standards if you have them, to ours if you don't. Surfaces and contours structured for Civil 3D import.
Data: Point files in your preferred format, control data sheets, and coordinate worksheets. Basis of bearings and vertical datum per your project specification.
Sealed documents: Boundary exhibits, ROW and easement descriptions, and as-built surveys signed by one of our two Registered Professional Land Surveyors.
Infrastructure & Site Work We Survey
Roads & Streets
Centerline and offset staking, curb and gutter, subgrade and finish grade, intersection layout, and ROW establishment for new roadways and reconstruction.
Drainage & Storm
Storm sewer staking, inlet and manhole locations, detention and retention pond grading, channel work, and the topo surfaces drainage design depends on.
Water & Sewer
Waterline and sanitary sewer staking, easement surveys and descriptions for utility corridors, and as-built documentation for utility acceptance.
Subdivisions
Boundary and topo for preliminary design, platting support, street and utility staking, lot corner setting, and phase-by-phase build-out support.
Commercial Site Work
Site development surveys from site planning through building pad, paving, and utility staking to final as-built for permitting closeout.
High-Accuracy Work
Projects with engineering, legal, or regulatory accuracy requirements — see our Category 1A survey capabilities for the tightest tolerance work.
A Survey Department Without the Overhead
Plenty of excellent civil engineering firms in the San Antonio market don't carry an in-house survey department — crews, equipment, and RPLS licensure are a heavy fixed cost when survey demand comes and goes with the project mix. The usual alternative is subcontracting to a big engineering firm's survey group... which means handing project visibility to a competitor.
Alliance is the third option: a dedicated surveying firm with no design practice at all. Bring us into a project and there is no scope for us to poach, no client relationship for us to grow into, and no awkwardness in front of your client. We work under your direction, deliver to your standards, and your client experiences one coordinated team.
For firms with recurring needs, we set up program arrangements — standing CAD standards, agreed turnaround expectations, and priority scheduling — so each new project starts without re-negotiating the basics.
How firms work with us:
Project-by-project — send plans and a scope; we quote the survey package and execute under your PM's direction.
Program support — recurring arrangement covering all survey scopes across your projects, with standing standards and scheduling priority.
Overflow capacity — you have crews, but they're committed. We pick up the staking phases or topo work that would otherwise slip your schedule.
Prime-and-sub — on projects where surveying is the prime scope, we can hold the survey contract and coordinate with your design scope as a peer.
Developers and contractors: the same support applies when you're the one holding the schedule — we coordinate directly with your engineer and your field superintendent.
