Civil surveying is the survey work that carries a civil engineering project from concept to closeout. Before an engineer can design a road, a drainage system, or a utility line, someone has to establish what exists: the boundaries and rights-of-way, the ground surface, the existing utilities, and a control network everything can be measured against. After the design is finished, someone has to translate it back onto the ground for the contractor — and document what actually got built.
